Memphis the Musical is a Broadway musical that is a sensational hit winning tremendous appreciation from audiences and critics as well. Originally the brain child of George W. George, Memphis was created with a rather direct and bold music score. Due to mixed previews the score was  sublimed and revised. Subsequently it was taken to stage for the first time in the 2003-04 season. Showcased at the east and west coast, the show was applauded has a melodious entertaining act. However, it couldn’t play for the next season for production team incompatibility and went dormant. Its recreation in 2008 took it to San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle’s Fifth Avenue. This time the east and west coasts got what they were missing for some time, a true new Broadway musical….and Memphis delivered just that!
 
Taking over Broadway, Memphis went under Christopher Ashley direction and Sergio Trujillo’s choreography. David Bryan took good care of the music score and lyrics along with Joe DiPietro. Eventually Shubert Theatre presented Memphis with a noticeable facelift that was aesthetically and tastefully pleasing. The show was on in October 2009 featuring the pre-Broadway cast Chad Kimball and Montego Glover. For the production ground, the major concerns of costume design to scenery to lighting designer also came from the 2003-2004 teams. The new team and old members gelled well to make every bit of the acting and production flawless. The show manifested itself with the real clubbing groove and stirred senses. The music and lyrics took a lead above all and Memphis made huge waves; it achieved one of the highest numbers of on demand shows. With more than seven hundred performances, this Broadway production has taken a lead in the list of similar entries.
 
Inspired by the life story of a Memphis DJ, the show is about eating drinking and sleeping black music. Coming of the era of the 50’s the storyline builds around the love of a white man Huey Calhoun for black music. He is seen as individual making effort to breakeven stereotypes with a public show of affection for the music. Delaray’s an African American club is resistant to Huey, because they are disconnected as blacks and whites. Loving black music, he gets to act out his talent at the club once with great difficulty, yet he manages to awe everyone from head to toe. Here he meets the love of his life Delray’s sister Felicia. Felicia and Huey’s music pursuits matched in color, size and shape and so did their feelings. Huey get his hands on his hometown’s airplay as a full time RJ playing his kind of music. He is a live sensation and manages to win unexpected fan following. With a rather intertwined series of events jolted by racist threats and job pressure, things complicate. He loses his job; however he reclaims Felicia by helping her go on air, where she is scouted to become a singer. Daley’s insecurities about his sister’s relationship end up in a tragic accident that takes Felicia and Huey apart. Huey keeps up his struggle to make black music accepted and mainstream and goes solo on radio waves. In effect, his listeners become more accommodating and accepting towards black. In time Felicia arrives to take him to the public to pay back what she owed him. Huey makes it to the stage and revives the fervor that he left thriving. More importantly he came back to bond blacks and whites as humans and nothing else.
 
The 2009-2010 season of Memphis is about the greatness and true spirits of this musical. It is not a wonder that Memphis has won four Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Orchestration. The Drama Desk Awards were swept by Memphis in the category of Best Musical. Montego Glover was regarded as the Best Female while David Bryan’s Music Score took the lead. The Best Orchestration’s award was bagged by David Bryan & Daryl Waters again. At the Outer Circle Critic’s Awards, things weren’t any different; the Best Musical Award went to Memphis for Montego Glover’s magnificent acting, Sergio Trujillo earned the Best Choreography win and the Best Score award went to David Bryan & Joe DiPietro. Additionally the Golden Icon Awards’ Musical in the Live Theatre division presented Memphis with the Best Musical Award.
