La Cage Aux Folles
Watching a movie in a cinema can be quite an experience for some people, whereas it can never come close to beating a live performance by a group of actors on stage. To some, nothing is more fulfilling that looking at a bunch of people portraying a story in the flesh in front of their own eyes. Musical theatre, like the many other forms of theatre, combines the use of songs, spoken dialogue and dance in order to communicate the story to the audience. One of the most successful musicals to ever come across musical theatre was La Cage aux Folles which has, ever since it was first played in 1983, won a whopping eleven Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, three Drama Desk Awards and one Drama League Award. It has also been nominated for more awards on several occasions.
Harvey Fierstein is the brainchild behind the La Cage aux Folles as he wrote the book on which it was based. The lyrics and music used in the production were written by Jerry Herman. In 1973, Jean Poiret was behind the French play on which the current musical takes its base from. The story revolves around the course of events that transpire in the lives of a homosexual couple. The first character, Georges, works in a Saint-Tropez nightclub as a manager. The other character, Albin, is romantically involved with his counterpart and is also the star of the show at the club. The story starts off when the highly conservative parents of Georges’ son’s fiancé come around to meet them.
The original musical first opened for viewing for the public on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on the 21st of August, 1983. It was a tremendous success and, as a result, the musical received a whooping six Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. It successfully ran for four years, with more than seventeen hundred performances. The creative team behind Broadway's production brought La Cage aux Folles to the West End in 1986. However, it could not mirror the success it received on Broadway and closed down after only 301 performances.
In 2004, La Cage aux Folles was set for its revival in modern theatre. Its first Broadway revival opened at the Marquis Theatre in December, 2004. The revival show ended up winning numerous Tony and Drama Desk awards and was considered successful overall despite the fact that ticket sales dropped near the end of the production which happened on the 26th of June 2005. The musical then saw its London revival open at the start of 2008, and played there for three months. The show dubbed as a success and was met with positive press mostly. It was later transferred to open for viewing at a different venue during the mid of October, 2008. In 2009, the musical ended up winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, and Douglas Hodge won for the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the character Albin. In all, it won two out of a total of seven nominations.
The show returned to Broadway at the Longacre Theatre and officially opened on the 6th of April, 2010. At the Tony's, the Broadway revival of the show received eleven nomination, out of winning it won three. Despite the fact that it could not win a larger number of awards as it had originally intended on doing considering the nominations, the show still did get its fair share of positive reviews from the critics, as well as the audience who had seen the show. The production closed viewing during the start of May, 2011, after it had gone on to host a total of nearly four hundred and thirty three performances. The show began its National Tour in October 2011 and it sees a completely refreshed cast with only one member from earlier productions. The tour hopes to revitalize the show and make it more accessible to people who have yet to see the musical.
Considering the number of awards this musical production has won and the time that it has been around for, it is sure to mesmerize anyone who will be lucky enough to get a chance to see the show live in front of their own eyes. People who are a fan of live theatre will most definitely want to be a part of one of musical theatre’s showpieces. This is your chance to do just that.
