About Ballet Arizona Directors Choice

The professional ballet company of Phoenix, Ballet Arizona, is led by the director, Ib Andersen, the world-renowned Danish ballet dancer and choreographer.  In 1986, the company was formed by the merger of three different and relatively smaller Arizona dance companies. Having a prominent place in the American ballet scene, Ballet Arizona is an innovative and provocative professional company which, comprises of 36 dancers today. Under the artistic direction of Andersen, the company has been creating, teaching and performing classical and contemporary ballet since its establishment. The ballet’s main mission is to preserve the classical dance history in its original form while creating innovative works at the same time. Apart from this, the company is also engaged in educating and serving the people of Arizona through the Education and Community Outreach programs. Under these programs, more than 35,000 children’s lives are touched every year with various ballet-based initiatives.
With a firm belief in the fact that a performance can change many lives, Ballet Arizona offers its audiences an opportunity to broaden their imaginations. The ballet’s performances take the audiences on a unique journey where they experience art beyond words, creating indelible memories. The three ballet companies which merged together to form Ballet Arizona included Ballet West Arizona, Phoenix Ballet and Arizona Dance Theatre. Since all of these three ballet entities were having difficulty in surviving due to lack of interest from audiences as well as shortage of funds, they were nearing their end. Ballet Arizona was originally under director Jean_PaulComelin, the former director of Stuttgart Balletand Milwaukee Ballet. He stayed with the company till 1992 when the directorship was taken up by Michael Uthoff. Ballet Arizona gives regular performances at the Orpheum Theatre and Phoenix Symphony Hall.
In 2000, the company came under artistic director Ib Andersen who is credited with reshaping the company, making it one of the most distinguished ballet and dance companies of America. Among his many works, the most important one entails the expansion of the company’s repertory and the inclusion of George Balanchine’s work. Apart from the works by Balanchine, the wide repertory of ballet Arizona includes the works by many other well-known choreographers, such as Twyla Tharp and Christopher Wheeldon. Andersen himself has choreographed many works for the company along with interpreting classical ballets such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Coppelia and Romeo Juliet. In 2008, a new version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Andersen was presented by the company.
