Inception
Inception of this musical came to be when Stephen Schwartz, a composer was on vacation. He discovered novel by Gregory Maguire. It was a long process to write a plot line that would incorporate the novel and the original Wizard of Oz. Winnie Holzman, Marc Platt and he worked on it. In 2003 the cast was ready for a test run. The first show was a standing ovation but critic comments were taken into account. Schwartz took three months to rewrite parts of the book and making Elphaba more prominent. The changes helped and the show went to Broadway.
Differences Between The Novel and Musical
Differences between the novel and musical are very obvious. The book is published in 1996 and the musical was on stage in 2003. The story line differs as well with the Broadway version being light and happy while the paperback is dark and evil. The novel goes in-depth to Elphaba childhood and upbringing. It shows her pain at the neglect by her father which the musical only shows while dropping her of at university. The Broadway production aims to please the people while the book is for readers who enjoy darker stories. Maguire kills off a lot of characters in his novel while Schwartz takes a lighter approach by changing the characters to something different.
