Revolutionary Musical Delivered With Political Passion
The reputation that Hamilton has of a ‘rousing musical’ is definitely well earned. Unconventional at its core, the musical ditches wigged founding members and presents them as largely non-white, bare-headed revolutionists. Alexander Hamilton takes the stage with a swagger and introduces himself as an immigrant and a bastard orphan. The opening number “Alexander Hamilton” alternates between sung exposition and rapping, immediately establishing that Hamilton will not be your regular history lesson.
Hamilton has been likened to a rock concert; some even say it’s a form of opera. Throughout the performance only few words are spoken and the rest are cited in verse. The musical covers many significant moments in American history, highlighting founding father’s feuds, infidelity, blackmail and numerous revelations.
The song “The Schuyler Sisters” in the first act introduces the three siblings Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy, belonging to the Schuyler family. An amalgamation of R&B, hip-hop and dance beats, it always receives hearty response from the audience. “Ten Duel Commandments” is an obvious callback to 90s’ hip-hop – specifically to the rappers Notorious B.I.G and their song “Ten Crack Commandments”. Recounting duel, the song plays an important role in making the audience at ease with pistols and violence.
The actors match the energy and variety of music, beautifully reflecting the multicultural approach of Hamilton. The ensemble cast brings the show together seamlessly, building onto powerful climaxes and even intimate moments.
Hamilton is already a classic, boasting of incredible showmanship, story and presentation. An invigorating, original musical, it should be on your must-watch list this season.
