One of Disney's very first stage adaptations, Beauty and the Beast – The Musical, is based on the classic fairy tale by French writer Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and the 1991 animated movie of the same. The story revolves around a handsome but selfish and cruel young prince who pays the price for his mean behavior when a wandering enchantress comes to his castle for help. When Belle comes to know of her father's captivity, she heads to the castle and confronts the Beast. Desperate for her dad's safe return, the girl trades her own freedom in return for Maurice's.

Back in town, there is considerable tension over Belle's imprisonment. This is mainly spurred by Gaston, the self-centered lover who wants to marry her. However, Belle and the Beast's feelings of hostility start to subside, and a friendship grows, which leads to conflicting emotions for both. Beauty and the Beast made its Broadway debut in 1994 and received nine nominations at the 48th Tony Awards, including "Best Musical," "Best Original Score," "Best Costume Design," and "Best Direction of a Musical," among other categories. Furthermore, the original Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast was also nominated ten times at the Drama Desk Awards.
