A Brief History of the Musical
.In 2016, A Bronx Tale made its debut at the Paper Mill Playhouse to popular and critical acclaim. It made its way to Broadway's Longacre Theater in 2016 and played there until August 2018. With more than 700 performances, this production became the second longest-running show in the theater's history. The production was later converted into a 1993 crime drama movie that starred Robert De Niro and Palminteri. The movie premiered on September 14, 1993, at the Toronto International Film Festival and was subsequently released in the US that year. It served as a launching pad for Palminteri, who then went on to star in films such as Analyze This and The Usual Suspects.
Premise of the Musical
Based on the original direction of Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and Oscar winner Robert De Niro, A Bronx Tale revolves around the themes of family, love, loyalty, and respect. The production tells the story of Calogero, a young Italian American boy from a working class family, who unexpectedly meets a mafia boss named Sonny. Calogero witnesses Sonny committing a murder, but, as Italian loyalty dictates, he refuses to tell the detectives who the criminal was. This gesture impresses Sonny so much that he decides to take the young boy under his wing. However, Calogero's father tries to rescue his son from a life of crime. Watch the play to see whether the boy will choose his new mobster life or his family values?
