The Blues from St. Louis were the first ice hockey franchise to be set up in St. Louis. The franchise was part of the bid to increase the number of teams in the NHL from six to twelve. St. Louis Blues were thus placed in the Western Conference where they play in the Central Division.
Fast Learners
The first coach of the fledgling franchise was Lynn Patrick. In his tenure the Blues recorded a mediocre record of 4-13-2. However, the club had plenty of resolve and soon turned things around under their new coach Scotty Bowman.
Unfinished Business
As a result of their commitment and determination, the Blues managed to make it to the finals of the coveted Stanley Cup three years in a row since joining the league. However, the Blues were unable lift the trophy as they were beaten all three times by bigger more established clubs such as the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins. The Blues remain the only franchise from the 1967 expansion not to have won the trophy. This year, the Blues are hopeful for a deep run into the playoffs that will lead them all the way to the championship.
Hall of Fame Veterans
During their early phase, the Blues were not able to lure young promising talents to their lineup. However, proven veterans were able to spot the hunger to win in the franchise and they were quick to sign up. Some of these players included such well-known names as Dickie Moore, Jacques Plante, Doug Harvey, Glenn Hall and Don McKenney. With 9 division titles under their belt, the Blues are no strangers to winning. And they will be bringing in all their experience when they take on the Leafs.
