Founded in 1967 as an expansion franchise, the St. Louis Blues are the oldest team in the NHL to have never won a Stanley Cup. The team currently plays in the Central Division of the NHL’s Western Conference and was crowned champions of their division last season. As the new NHL Season gets ready to kick off, the Blues will hope to build upon last season’s good showing and hopefully challenge for the Stanley Cup once again. Resident’s of the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis, the Blues get their name from W.C. Handy’s famous song “St. Louis Blues”. The song plays at each of their home fixtures and is the team’s unofficial anthem.
The Blues in recent years
In recent years the Blues have become a staple of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Since the 2011-2012 season, the team has qualified for the playoffs each season. They lost in the conference semifinals in 2012, losing to the Los Angeles Kings. Th next season they lost to the Kings again, this time in the conference quarterfinals.
In the last two seasons, the Blues have failed to cross to conference quarterfinals, losing to the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild respectively.
During this time, the team has won two Division Championships, in the 2011-2012 season and the 2014-2105 season. Considering the fact that the Blues have to compete with the dominant Blackhawks in their division, it says a lot about the team’s potential.
Silverware
Overall the Blues have won nine Division Championships and one President’s Trophy since their inception. During their earlier years, the team was a dominant force in their division, before the Blackhawks rose to ascendancy. However, in the last decade, the Blues have become serious contenders once again.
Seventeen former Blues have been inducted to the NFL Hall of Fame, while Glenn Hall remains the only Blues player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy.
