San Diego State Aztecs are sports and athletic teams belonging to San Diego State University. The sports that the university facilitates are basketball, baseball, golf, football, gymnastic, football, soccer, tennis, softball, rowing, water polo, swimming and softball. Total of seventeen varsity teams are there. The Aztecs sports teams compete in Division I of NCAA with Mountain West being their primary conference. The water polo team of women competes in Big West Conference while the soccer team of men in Pacific-12 Conference. San Diego State Aztecs’ rowing team belongs to Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association and their football team belongs to the famous Big East Conference. Before that the football team played in West sports but was moved to Big East in 2013. This is because their campus is famous by the name of "Montezuma Mesa" because of its location near mesa which overlooks the Mission Valley. San Diego State Aztecs football team’s current head coach is Rocky Long and they are currently playing in the highest ranking football sports division of America; "Football Bowl Subdivision" NCAA. For the past thirty seven years, till 2010, the team was deprived off any bowl game. However they won the Poinsettia Bowl 2010, finally managing to kill the long draught. Over the years a number of players from Aztecs have made it to National Football League. Many of head coaches of NFL were members of Aztec. Some of these include Don Coryell, Brian Billick, John Madden, Herman Edwards and Sean Payton.
San Diego basketball team’s current head coach is Steve Fisher, and for women’s team it is Beth Burns. Many of the university’s players have made it to NBA. Some of the famous names being Michael Cage, Jene Morris, Kawhi Leonard, Brandon Heath and Malcolm Thomas. In the recent 2010-2011 season, their men’s team made a very prominent record of 32-2. They also won the Mountain West Conference title and made it to NCAA basketball tournament. In the National Championship Tournament they stood at number two position, making the Aztec sports teams proud.
Till the date San Diego State Aztecs have won one championship in basketball, three in football, one in volleyball and one in rugby. Their cheerleading team won College Cheerleading National Championship twice and their dance team won Dance National Championship in 2011.
