The athletic teams at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are known as the North Carolina Tar Heels. The term "Tar Heels" is used to refer to individuals belonging to the state of North Carolina. The Chapel Hill campus of the University of North Carolina serves the purposes of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Fans and locals have given the Tar Heels many nicknames, including "The Heels," "Carolina," "UNC," and "North Carolina." Whatever the fans call them, the Heels make sure to deliver their best in every sport they play. The list of athletic achievements is quite long, and the Heels have a long list of victories and championships to boast of. They have won thirty-eight team National Championships in a total of five different sports, for a total of fifty-one National Championships. As far as women's championships are concerned, the UNC has a stunning number there too. The Heels have conquered nineteen national championships in Soccer since 1981. The soccer team for men is equally impressive, as they too have won a National Championship in 2001.
Basketball fanatics need not be depressed as the women's basketball team outshone every competitor and won the championship in 1994. The men's team also did quite well and took home the championship titles many times, starting from 1924. They won again in flying colors in 1957, 1993, 1982, and most recently in 2005. The men's lacrosse team won in 1982, 1991, and 1986. The women's field hockey team won four championships. The women's handball team won in 2004, and the men's team won three championships in a row from 2004 to 2006, wowing fans everywhere.
The 2004 ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta was won by the men's team in eight categories. The men's baseball team has stunned fans and opponents many times, and it made it to the Championship round of the College World Series in 2006. It seems like the list of achievements is endless when it comes to the Athletic department of the University; in 1994, the Sears Directors Cup was awarded to the Heels for their growing performance in NCAA competition. In total, the Heels have won a Helms Title, five men's basketball titles, and four NCAA Championships. Do we still need proof of the capabilities of the teams?
Their mascot is Remeses, a bighorn ram. It is seen either as a costumed character, which is played by a volunteer student, or by an actual Dorset sheep with its horns painted Carolina blue. The Heels also have a cheerleading squad. The team colors for The Heels are Carolina blue and white. The players hail to the playground singing their fight song: "I'm a Tar Heel Born, Here Comes Carolina". Their athletics director is Dick Baddour. The Heels' arch rivals are Duke, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest. Their intense rivalry with Virginia also attracts hordes of fans to sport arenas.
We have all heard of big names like Michael Jordan, Davis Love III, Jeff Reed, Mia Hamm, Eddie Pope, and Daniel Bard. All of these infamous sportsmen are graduates of UNC, and the university is proud of them. North Carolina has always been a top favorite among sports fans, and its tickets sell out quickly.
