Idaho Vandals are the intercollegiate teams of University of Idaho. Besides football, its most popular team, the intercollegiate athletic program has men and women's team in basketball, golf, tennis, cross-country, volleyball, swimming, soccer and indoor and outdoor track. The teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) which the university joined in July 2005. Before that the university was a part of Big West which it had joined in 1998 but discontinued because the latter discontinued football.
Idaho Vandals got their name from a student writer who tagged the basketball team in a pregame write up referring to the team as ?Vandal's who will mark a new beginning in basketball. Later, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts succeeded in having the university adopt the name for the college teams. University of Idaho is Idaho's oldest public university established in 1889. The first class graduated in 1896 with two women and two men. The present number of students enrolled at the university is around 11,000. It is located in the rural city of Moscow in Latah Country in Idaho. For 71 years after its establishment, it was the state's only university. The university has a rich and old culture of sports emphasizing competition, independent thinking and doers. Idaho Vandals avail several sports facilities at the university, the major being its indoor stadium named Kibbie Dome. It was built in 1971 as an outdoor stadium and was later enclosed in 1975. Kibbie Dome has a seating capacity of 18,000 and is for football, basketball, indoor tennis and indoor track. The basketball arena is called Cowan Spectrum with a seating capacity of 7,000. Kibbie Dome also has athletic department offices, weight rooms, training facilities and locker rooms. Joe Vandal is the official mascot of Idaho Vandals. The tradition began in 1950 with a yell leader named Bill Currie who appeared at the games with a homemade mask, made by his mother. Currie motivated the university's fans. Later he was invited to travel with the teams and draw as much attention as he could. In 2000 Joe Vandal was briefly replaced by another mascot named Inflatbale Joe but he wasn't welcomed by the students and Joe Vandal made a comeback to cheering fans. He is inspired by Germanic warriors. Today he keeps the tradition alive by leading his Idaho Vandals into the game. In July 2009 Joe was ranked fifth by Sports Page magazine among the most unique sports mascots in the country. Joe wears a black and gold shirt, the colors of the sports teams, with a Viking helmet. Unlike the usual mascots, Joe's face is fierce and powerful that goes with the fighting spirit of the university's sports tradition. Black and metallic gold are the official colors of the university to honor the mining tradition of the state. Silver is replaced by black because it is not very complementary for sports uniform. The football team in 1995 changed its color from yellow gold to metallic gold which was followed by other university teams later. Before that yellow gold and black were the most used colors by the university team. The official logo of the teams is also in black and metallic gold with Vandals written in small letters against an ?I'. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta Dan O' Brien won a gold medal for Idaho Vandals. In 2000, Joachim Olsen won the NCAA outdoor championship representing the Vandals. He never finished less than third in the eight times that he competed at NCAA outdoor appearances. Idaho's Angela Whyte was named the Big West Female Athlete of the Year in 2001. The Vandals were also represented at the 2004 and 2008 Canada Olympics track teams. The team has an official website and an official fan club. Besides, it has numerous blogs and fan clubs both at the campus and online, an I-Club. Idaho Vandal Tickets are always in demand because of the strong tradition of fighting that the teams follow. The university's athletic department has sponsored sports for more than a hundred years and hence produced a number of successful athletes, coaches building a rich history of academic achievement and competition. Accountability, gender equality and integrity are some of the core values of the students and the university. Tradition also plays an important symbolic role for the Vandals which is evident not only from the apparent manifestations like their colors, uniforms or mascots but in their sense of pride in the culture they belong to.
