The Georgia Bulldogs, also known as Bulldogs or simply Dawgs, represent the University of Georgia in the Southern Conference. There are currently 19 teams that represent the University in different competitions, including 10 women's teams and 9 men's teams in sports such as tennis, swimming and diving, soccer, gymnastics, equestrian, cross country, golf, track, softball, basketball, baseball, football, and volleyball. The dignified and ferocious Bulldog breed is the mascot of the teams. The first mascot to represent the team was Uga the Bulldog in 1956; Uga VII is the great-grandson of Uga. The Georgia Bulldogs football team is one of the oldest varsity teams of the NCAA, active since 1892 and ranked among the top teams of the NCAA. It has won two National Championships, fourteen Conference Championships, and two Divisional Championship titles. The team has appeared in forty-five bowl games and won forty-five of them. The Georgia Bulldogs football team plays home games at Sanford Stadium, which, with careful expansion and sound renovation, has become one of the best and seventh largest stadiums of the NCAA, with a capacity for about ninety-three thousand viewers. All the deceased Ugas are buried in the southern corner of the facility. Famous football Bulldogs include David Pollack, Herschel Walker, Drew Butler, Champ Bailey, Garrison Hearst, Matt Stinchcomb, Bill Stanfill, and Blair Walsh.


Mark Richt, the current coach of the football team, is so far the most successful coach in the history of the Bulldog football team. Other prominent names include Vince Dooley, Charles McCarthy, W.A. Cunningham, Branch Bocock, Herman Stegeman, Jim Donnan, and George Kid Woodruff. Ten Bulldogs have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; these names include John Russell, Kevin Butler, John Rauch, Herschel Walker, Terry Hoage, Bill Stanfill, Bill Hartman, Fran Tarkenton, Charley Trippi, Vernon "Catfish" Smith, Bob McWhorter, and Frank Sinkwich. The main rivals of the Bulldogs are the Florida Gators, Auburn, and Georgia Tech, and these rivalries are more than a century old. The Bulldogs have a winning percentage of .59% against the Yellow Jackets. This "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate" between the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets has existed since 1893.


The Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball and Georgia Bulldogs men's basketball teams represent the university in the NCAA tournaments and are members of the Southern Conference. The Lady Dogs have been active since 1973 and have yet been unable to win an NCAA title, although they have reached the finals twice. Andy Landers has been the team's coach since 1979 and has been the most successful Lady Dog Basketball coach so far. Notable Lady Dogs include Kara Braxton, Kelly Miller, Taro Phillips, Coco Miller, Saudia Roundtree, Shrill Baker, Teresa Edwards, Katrina Johnson, and Deanna Nolan. The team's home ground is Stegeman Coliseum, which was opened in 1964 and has a capacity for over 10 thousand viewers.


The Georgia Bulldogs men's basketball team has been active since 1891. They were inducted into the Southeastern Conference in 1932. The Bulldogs have been Conference Tournament Champions twice and won the conference regular season in 1990. They also reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 1983. Dominique Wilkins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Other notable players include Shandon Anderson, Sundiata Gaines, Willie Anderson, Jarvis Hayes, Jumaine Jones, Litterial Green, and Alec Kessler. The team is currently coached by Mark Fox. All Georgia Bulldog teams have won a total of 37 national titles and 130 Southern Conference championships.
