At the age of 11, Wonder created his first composition “Lonely Boy”. He sang that to Ronnie White of the Miracles. White took him and his mother to Motown where the CEO signed him to Motown’s Tamla label. Stevie Wonder has been loyal to Tamla label ever since and has released all of his albums and singles through the label that gave him his start. By the end of the ‘60s, Wonder had released twelve studio albums and over twenty singles and ended the decade with a compilation album titled Greatest Hits. His live album Recorded Live: The 12 Year Old Genius topped the charts in the US and the UK and become the best-selling R&B album of the decade by an under-twenty. The ‘70s saw Wonder release ten albums including two live albums and a soundtrack album for the documentary The Secret Life of Plants. Out of the twenty two Grammy Awards that Wonder won throughout his career, twelve of them were won during the ‘70s. These include three ‘Album of the Year’ for his albums Innervisions, Fulfillingness’ First Finale and Songs in the Key of Life. Singles like “Superstition,” “Living for the City,” “I Wish” and two others were critically acclaimed, peaked on the charts and won the Grammy Awards in their respective categories. Since the ‘80s, Wonder has released eight albums including two soundtrack albums and a live album. He won ten more Grammys for his singles and collaborations. For his diverse services to music, he has won numerous prizes, inductions and awards.
