About Dawes

Hailing from North Hills, California, Dawes was founded by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith. They were joined by the likes of Blake Mills and Wylie Gelber. Blake Mills left the band after a while and guitarist Alex Casnoff joined the line-up before he was eventually replaced by Tay Strathairn. The current lineup consists of Taylor Goldsmith, Griffin Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn.

The band takes its inspiration from the works of Laurel Canyon sound maestros such as Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, Crosby and Neil Young. Encouraged by producer Jonathan Wilson, Dawes began performing local jam sessions that initiated a successful musical journey.

Dawes rose to stardom with its debut album “North Hills” that was released on the August 18, 2009. The album earned a lot of critical praise for its whetted grit, soul and a sense of tranquility that overpowers the listeners. The album went to the number 23 spot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and consisted of 11 tracks all composed by Taylor Goldsmith. All in all, it was an emblem of deep-rooted classic rock. Kyle MacKinnel of the Filter described it as “straightforward” and a “refreshing reminder of our roots,” while others like Martyn Young described it as a “subtle wonder” with “evocative charms.”

Dawes came up with its sophomore album “Nothing Is Wrong” on June 7, 2011. It turned out to be more successful than its forerunner, peaking at number 5 on the US Folk Albums and coming in at number 10 on the US Independent Albums . The album’s music was a blend of instruments such as the lap steel guitar and organ. The background vocals were done by musicians such as Jonathan Wilson and Jackson Browne.

An 11-song album, “Nothing Is Wrong turned out to be the troupe’s magnum opus and was critically praised, as Chris Calarco of the Glide Magazine remarked “with Nothing Is Wrong’s ability to fire poignant and lasting musical arrows straight from a heart of gold, Dawes signals it’s here to stay.” The album brought critical acclaim for Taylor Goldsmith’s songwriting skills as well while charting at number 18 on the US Top Rock Albums and at number 8 on the US Top Tastemaker Albums.

“Stories Don’t End” is Dawes’ most recent album released on April 19, 2013 and the first to be released by HUB Records. It also received widespread positive reviews from critics across the board. The album features 12 tracks, some of which have been co-written and composed by Blake Mills. It peaked at the 36th position on the US Billboard 200, 3rd on the US Folk Albums, 5th on the US Independent Albums, 9th on the US Top Rock Albums and notched the 2nd position on the US Top Tastemaker Albums. Hit single “Just Beneath The Surface” also made it to the animated series “American Dad.”

Dawes made their TV debut on April 14, 2010 with “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” The band has also toured the country with stars like Blitzen Trapper and Jackson Browne. They have appeared on the TV series “Parenthood” as well. They are now on tour and this is your chance to watch this famous classic rock band caste its magic in your neck of the woods.
