ZZ Ward was born in Abington, Pennsylvania. She was raised during her childhood in Roseburg, Oregon. Her complete name is Zsuzsanna Eva Ward. She started taking interest in music while she was just a kid and got the basic training from her father in genres like blues, soul and hip hop. She grew up listening to her father’s huge collection of blues music as well as her brothers collection of hip hop, basically this was the time that she developed and affection for both these genres. By the time she was 12 years old she had started singing her father’s blues band. Ward is surely a gifted artist as she is not just a singer but also a musician and lyricist. She can fluently play instruments like guitar, piano and harmonica. Ward is currently under exclusive recording contract with Hollywood Records and Boardwalk Entertainment Group. Ward started her career by releasing an EP in 2012 that was titled Criminal. Just after a few months she was able to release her first studio album called Til the Casket Drops. This proved to be a fine effort by Ward and quickly grabbed the attention of the listeners. This album contained 13 tracks including "Til The Casket Drops", "Put The Gun Down", "Last Love Song", "Move Like You Stole it", "Charlie Ain’t Home" and "Blue Eyes Blind". Put The Gun Down was a hit and entered the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart at #40.

Ward also had a chance to perform this song live on the popular TV show Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The song "Til The Casket Drops" was featured in one of the promo campaigns of the TV series Pretty Little Liars. "Move Like You Stole it" was featured in the MTV teen comedy series called Awkward in the finale of season 2.  In 2012 ZZ Ward also managed to release a mixtape that was titled Eleven Roses. In this album she gave her interpretations on the work of different artists such as Tyler the Creator, Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar. Eleven Roses contained tracks like last Love Song, Got It Bad, Cinnamon Six and Better off Dead.
