The Beginning

Tig Notaro is known as just Tig since childhood. The nickname was given by her brother. Notaro spent her early years in a small town called Pass Christian in Mississippi. As a child, she was quite mischievous and often got into a lot of trouble.

Tig Notaro first moved to Texas and later in the 1990s she relocated to Los Angeles and began exploring her interest and talent in stand-up comedy. She used to ride around the city on her bike and perform at various open-mic events through which she garnered quite a lot of popularity in the entrainment circuit in the city. Soon she had the opportunity to make appearances on television as well.

In the year 2004, Notaro was seen in one of the episodes of Comedy Central Presents. She earned the admiration of fellow comedians such as Sarah Silverman. This led to her guest appearance as Officer Tig on the comedy show titled The Sarah Silverman Program which aired from 2007 till 2010. It was around his time that Notaro started her weekly podcast called Professor Blastoff in which she explored various scientific topics. She hosted the show with comedians David Huntsberger and Kyle Dunnigan.

The comedian went through a rough patch when she was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly after her diagnosis, she took the stage at Largo, a popular club in Los Angeles. She decided to put together a personal performance and came up with the idea of walking on stage and say “I have cancer, thanks for coming.” She spent some time to find humor in this difficult topic and then gave a performance that left the audience spellbound. Comedian Louis C.K was among the audience at the event and praised Notaro’s performance on Twitter in the following words: “In 27 years doing this, I've seen a handful of truly great, masterful stand-up sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo.” Soon after Notaro put out a recording of her live act that was later sold as Tig Notaro Live. The record earned the comedian a nomination at the Grammys.

Tig Notaro made her debut in movies with In a World… - an independent comedy. It was released in the year 2013. The comedian was also seen on the first season of the sketch comedy TV series Inside Amy Schumer. She could not sign the next season as she had too many of her own projects going on at the time. In 2015, Notaro had her own Showtime program titled Knock, Knock, It’s Tig Notaro which earned her a lot of fame. She made her HBO debut with the stand-up special Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted the very same year.
