How It Started

Jo Koy first began doing stand up comedy in Las Vegas at a well known comedy club in 1994. After a brief stint here, he was hired to perform at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in its show, Catch a Rising Star, as a regular performer. He also hosted his own performances in venues such as the Huntridge Theater, and even went so far as to sell his own tickets door to door after booking a venue. His first appearance on TV was on the show, BET’s Comic View, through a talent coordinator who saw Jo Koy perform in Las Vegas and was impressed by his sense of humor. Jo Koy appeared in two seasons of the show Comic View as well as on the show Showtime at the Apollo.

Jo Koy, his stage name, comes from a Filipino term which means ‘joker.’ It was a nickname his family gave him at a young age due to his comic behavior. He therefore decided to use this nickname in his performances and it has since then stuck. Today the name is recognized and Jo Koy is known as a remarkable standup comedian who is the star of a number of TV shows. He has appeared on shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central Presents and Chelsea Lately as well as Netflix’s specials which feature his hilarious jokes combined with his signature fiery on stage energy. Koy has also released his own DVDs, Don’t Make Him Angry, a commercial success and critically acclaimed Lights Out.       

Road to Stardom

Jo Koy was a regular guest on the show Chelsea Lately and appeared on it weekly, doing more than 100 shows. He performs at various clubs all over the US and has become a phenomenon in his own right in the world of standup comedy. It is a far cry from his rather humble beginnings, when he started performing standup comedy. His first performance began at a Las Vegas coffee house and it was his unlimited energy on the stage, his catchy and insight filled jokes and his humor inspired by his family that resulted in Jo Koy becoming a sensation, and one of the ten comics to watch, according to the Daily Variety.       

According to Jo Koy, it was his mother who constantly supported and encouraged him to pursue his talent in comedy and his knack as an actor. It was his mother who encouraged him to perform at school talent shows and perform in front of family members, relatives and friends. The constant encouragement led Jo Koy to start performing at a local coffee house then move to Los Angeles and finally get a performance in 2005 in The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In fact, he was one of the very few performers at this show who received a ‘standing ovation’. It changed everything for him.

  In 2006, Jo Koy performed with Carlos Mencia for his Punisher Tour followed by an appearance in a number of popular and famous shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, BET’s Comic View, Last Call with Carson Daly and Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza. He has also performed in various VH1 I Love the 70s, 80s and 90s show episodes. In 2019, Jo Koy’s stand-up comedy album, ?Live From Seattle reached number 1 on the Billboard Charts.?
