Indie music is a genre of music that has been steadily growing in popularity over time. After the development of new sounds during the eighties and nineties, people wanted to listen to something different and unique. That gave rise to a number of bands that started off playing alternate rock but slowly experimented and worked on their music to develop the indie sound. Quite a few bands have since then picked up the genre, including one of the most successful indie bands in the world today, Spoon.

Spoon have been a part of the music industry for a long time and have always tried to do something new and innovative with their sound. Because of this need to experiment, it took them a little while to garner a dedicated fan base but once they did, they went from strength to strength to reach the top of the Indie music mountain. Spoon was formed in 1993 by Britt Daniel (vocals, guitar) and Jim Eno (drums). Daniel was a guitarist who had played in several bands before he met Eno. Both of them were in a band called ?The Alien Beats? with whom they released a few recordings and E.Ps.

After the dissolution of the Beats, they decided to form their own group so that they could have complete creative control over the kind of music they wanted to make. Since Daniel was a singer and songwriter, he would write most of the lyrics and come up with the compositions. Eno, an engineer by profession handled the recording and production aspects of the bands future albums.

The two friends then brought Greg Wilson (guitar) and Andy Maguire (bass) on board to form the first lineup of the band and in 1996 they released their first album titled ?Telephono.? The album was  received positively by the critics, even though it did not do as well commercially. Their next effort, ?A Series of Sneaks? fared a bit better but did not make the kind of impact members of the Spoon hoped it would. However, it drew favorable comparisons to several classic rock bands of the seventies and eighties and was praised for its mature lyrics and beautiful compositions. Their third album called ?Girls Can Tell? finally became their first album to be critically and universally acclaimed. It made more money that their previous two albums combined and gave the band their first taste of success and recognition.

That was followed up by ?Kill the Moonlight? and it followed the success of its predecessor. ?Gimme Fiction? and ?Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga? hit the music stores in 2005 and 2007 respectively. Both albums made headlines everywhere and made it to the top of the US Independent Albums in the process.

Their last album, titled ?They Want My Soul? came after a transitioning period in the bands history. It was recorded after all the band members took a break in order to pursue other interests. Some worked on solo projects during this time while others worked on production but they came back together in the end to come out with another amazing album. They Want My Soul was really well received in almost every quarter and people praised Spoon for trying out a new sound without losing touch of their roots.

Each and every new release takes them one step higher in the music world as the band tries to accomplish something unique every time they record an album or a song. Their last two albums have managed to finish on the fourth spot on the US Music Charts.
