Paul Frederic Simon was born to Jewish-Hungarian parents in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Louis Simon, although a college professor, was also an accomplished bassist and dance bandleader. In fact, when he was still in Hungary, he was one of the first musicians on Hungarian radio.
Paul Simon was into music from the very beginning. While still at high school, he met Art Garfunkel, whom he would team up professionally later, and started playing for school events. Their early influences were Everly Brothers, Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly. They were interested in jazz, folk and blues, in that early stage. That these high school teenagers were to have a great music career could be gauged from the fact that while still at school they wrote "Hey, Schoolgirl." This song went all the way to number forty-nine on the pop charts.
Paul Simon, an American singer and songwriter, became famous in the mid-1960s when he teamed up with Art Garfunkel, under Columbia Records. The dynamic duo became known as Simon & Garfunkel. Their first album was Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. While the album itself initially flopped, one of its singles, "The Sounds of Silence" went all the way to the very top of the US Pop Charts. The success of this one single encouraged them to release four more successful albums.
Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, Bookends and Bridge over Troubled Water were albums that came after their debut album. One of the albums, Bridge over Troubled Water became very successful and won Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It was ranked at number 51 on Rolling Stone?s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. It later went on to win Best International Album at the very first Brit Awards, as well.
Apart from writing and singing songs, the dynamic duo was also closely associated with Hollywood. In 1967, Dustin Hoffman?s and Anne Bancroft?s, The Graduate, was released. Simon & Garfunkel had extensively worked on its soundtrack. The song "Mrs. Robinson" from the same movie became top ten of The American Film Institute?s 100 Years 100 Songs. Although the talented pair split in 1970, the two have worked together and have produced some great music. They paired up again, albeit temporarily, under the name "Old Friends" Concert Series. This series was a huge success and a feast for Simon & Garfunkel fanes.
Paul Simon has had a very successful solo music career. The album Paul Simon was released in 1972 and went all the way to the very top of the UK Albums Chart. Next came There Goes Rhymin? Simon, reaching number 2 position on the American Billboard Pop Albums. In 1975 Still Crazy After All These Years was released. This album like its predecessors did incredibly well and won Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1976. In 1986, Paul released Graceland. It was an instant hit and once again won the prestigious Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Continuing with his record success, Paul Simon released The Rhythm of the Saints in 1990. The album became number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and was multi-platinum. His most recent work, influenced by bluegrass music, will be coming out shortly, under the name So Beautiful Or So What.
Paul also produced a Broadway musical, The Capeman, in the late 1990s. He appeared as a music producer in Woody Allen?s Annie Hall. He also starred in One Trick Pony. He has appeared in several other movies and TV shows.
The duo of Simon & Garfunkel has been recognized for its exceptional work in the form of induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. In 2003, they were given the very prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Paul Simon himself has won multiple music related awards and was also selected by the Time Magazine as one of the "100 People Who Shaped the World." The Library of Congress also bestowed him with Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2007.
