Born with a gift
Baez was born in 1941 and is of Mexican descent. Her father was a scientist, involved in the field of health care, and even helped create the world’s first x-ray microscope. Her mother was a housewife, and enjoyed a great relationship with her daughter, who lived with her till her death at the age of just over a hundred. Joan’s parents had a huge influence on her life, as it was they who inculcated the concepts of social justice and equality into her head and made her realize the importance of striving for peace and basic human rights.
They also supported their daughter in her pursuit of music, which she naturally seemed to have a knack for. She learned how to play chords on a ukulele and soon moved on to the guitar. By the time she was in college, she had already started to perform in various venues across town and was even getting paid to do so. This convinced her that her future lay in the music industry, prompting her to quit school and focus on her career fulltime.
First steps to success
While performing at a local club, she decided to get together with two other musicians to make a folk album. Called “Folksingers 'Round Harvard Square,” the record came out in 1959 and got her plenty of recognition in the folk music industry, including two of its most highly rated singers, Odetta and Bob Gibson. The latter would invite Baez to join him on stage in a few of his shows, making her an overnight success. Soon record companies were knocking at her doors, willing her to sign their contract, which she eventually did, in 1960.
Later that same year, Baez released her debut, self titled, album and saw it become popular across the world. It made it to number fifteen on the Billboard charts and number six on the UK music charts, while it recorded gold and silver level sales in the US and UK respectively. It also announced to the rest of the world that a new force had arrived in the music industry, one that would demand attention over the next fifty years or so.
Legendary status confirmed
Since then, Baez has recorded a total of twenty four albums, with her last coming out back in 2008. Of these, eight have recorded gold level sales, in either the US or the UK, and have helped her win several accolades over the years as well. She has been nominated for the Grammy Awards seven times to date, and in 2007 she finally managed to win the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony, for her lasting impact on the music industry. She has also won an International Bluegrass Award, three San Francisco Bay Area Awards and two Honorary Doctorate Degrees for Doctor of Humane Letters, from the Antioch University and Rutgers University.
Now she is finally making a return to the stage, after a long time away. Her fans will be clamoring for the tickets, and if you want to catch her performance for yourself as well, then here is your chance. Just book your Joan Baez tickets and enjoy her show, live.
