Who is Dr. Jordan Peterson?

Dr. Peterson is a Canadian. Born in Edmonton, Alberta,Peterson’s mother was a librarian, while his father a school teacher. As a teenager he was introduced to the writings of Ayn Rand, George Orwell, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and others. He was part of the New Democratic Party (NDP) for a while but later left.

Peterson graduated from the University of Alberta with an undergraduate degree in political science. He started to take interest in psychological origins of the Cold War and grew concerned about the escalation of nuclear arms race. Fascinated by human capacity to self-destruct, Peterson was drawn towards the writings of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Carl Jung and Friedrich Nietzsche. Peterson’s interest in psychology led him to getting a second undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Alberta. Later, Peterson obtained his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from McGill University.

Dr. Peterson later taught at Harvard University. He is currently a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto.

Works

Dr. Peterson is considered an authority in the fields of abnormal, social and personality psychology with main focus on psychology of religious and ideological belief. While teaching at Harvard, he supervised a number of unconventional thesis proposals on these topics, which endeared him to his students.

Dr. Jordan Peterson has authored two books, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief and 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos.

Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief

This book is on how people construct meaning in accordance with the modern scientific understanding of how the brain functions. The book includes the theories of God and religion, natural origin of modern culture and is influenced by the works of Dr. Peterson’s idols such as Dostoyevsky, Nietzsche, Stephen Hawking and others.

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos

Dr. Peterson’s latest book is on abstract ethical principles about life based on scientific research, clinical experience, myths, religion, literature and biology. Considered a more “readable” book than its predecessor, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos was a best-seller in the US, UK, France, Germany and Australia.

You can find Dr. Peterson’s lectures on YouTube. Over one million subscribe to his channel and there are over 300 videos on topics ranging from Biblical series to identity politics and from Marxism to personality and its transformation. His videos have had over 50 million views.

The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast is Dr. Peterson’s podcast since December 2016. This podcast is based on Dr. Peterson’s lectures and interviews some of which are specifically recorded for this podcast.

Controversies

Dr. Peterson is an ardent critic of political correctness, feminism, Marxism, human rights organizations and “white privilege”to name a few. His colleague, Prof. Ira Wells has called him “the professor of piffle”. In short, he’s not short of critics who all find consensus in calling him someone who provides an academic coating to old-school rightwing hypocrisy.

On 7 February, 2018, in the Psychology section of The Guardian, Dorian Lynskey’s article titled “How dangerous is Jordan B Peterson, the rightwing professor who ‘hit a hornets’ nest’?” was published. Commenting on Dr. Peterson’s latest book, Lynskey called it full of pseudo facts and conspiracy theories. He further alleges Dr. Peterson’s supporters to be abusive. Dr. Peterson is said to be dismissive of ideas he disagrees with by calling them insane and ridiculous.
