Reunion

The official Dixie Dregs lineup has been rumored to be getting back together since early 2015 when they performed some gigs around New York City. However, the band members have kept mum about any such reunion until now. The original drummer for the Dregs, Rod Morgenstein, announced in an official video that the band is indeed getting back together for a number of shows in 2018. The video was a promo for his album ?Rock, Roots & Blues? however it ended up going viral for the reunion announcement.

Original bassist for the Dregs, Andy West also commented on the reunion on the band?s official website, saying that; ?Earlier this year, the five of us (Steve Morse, Rod Morgenstein, Allen Sloan, Steve Davidowski and Andy West) got together and started talking seriously about playing together as the Dixie Dregs again.? He further on mentioned that some of the members of this band have known one another since high school while others have known one another since college, and are now in their sixties. Therefore, there is a great deal of shared history as well as an undeniable chemistry which makes these reunion shows promising ones.

Who are the Dregs?

The Dixie Dregs are an instrumental band which stems from Augusta, Georgia in the 1970s. The band was originally called Dixie Grit and formed by Andy West and Steven Morse and other musicians. However, after Morse was enrolled at the University of Miami in 1971, the outfit disbanded. Morse and West continued to perform as a two-piece and called themselves Dixie Dregs (from the ?dregs? of Dixie Grit).

From the beginning, however, the band was focused in the kind of music it performed. It was mostly instrumental, with influences of Jazz and blue grass. After studying classical guitar and meeting other musicians in the University?s vibrant music scene, the Dregs? music added even more influences. Meanwhile, the band doubled in size as Allen Sloan and Bart Yarnal were added on the violin and drums (respectively). By 1973, the group began to play as the ?Rock Ensemble II?. Mark Parrish was added to this band after West joined Georgia State University and began learning how to play the cello.

Rise to Fame

In the following years, the five-piece experimented between their music studies and the music they played, and focused on creating long instrumental numbers which blended into one another. In 1975, the group recorded their first LP ?The Great Spectacular? which was recorded at the University of Miami and one thousand copies of the record were distributed. The band was immediately signed to Capricorn Records and they recorded ?Free Fall? in 1977. But it was their fourth album, ?Night of the Living Dregs? which gained the band their first GRAMMY nomination in 1979. This album was produced by The Beatles? producer Ken Scott and his long-time collaborator, George Martin. In the following years, Dixie Dregs were signed to Arista Records where they completed two more records.

Singular Driving Force

Dixie Dregs are all about the music and they want to give their fans an authentic experience. Each of the records they have created are ones every member was driven to work on. However, the five members of this band are also session musicians and they also perform their own solo shows. Pariah for example, has spent many years working as a pianist for Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, Glen Campbell and countless others.

Whenever the five members feel like jamming together, they announce a string of reunion shows. However, as of the 2000s, Dixie Dregs have not performed any show as a collective. A whole generation of music listeners is growing up without a live experience of the Dregs. Therefore, fans have been ecstatic ever since Dixie Dregs tickets have been made available. They know these are going to be great shows because the one thing driving the band, the one thing that has kept it going till now, is music which they will make the most of in this show.
