Conan Gray: The birth of a star
Conan Gray is a U.S. native who was born in San Diego, California on December 5, 1998. He is of Irish-Japanese descent. When he was one and a half years old, his family took him to Hiroshima, Japan to take care of his grandfather who was suffering from cancer. After his passing, he moved back to his birth city but unfortunately, his parents soon divorced. While Gray was studying in sixth grade, he flew to Texas with his mother's family where they ultimately settled.
During his early years, Conan Gray began to show interest in creative arts. Due to his growing passion, he thought of sharing his ideas with the world and for that purpose, he created his YouTube channel on January 14, 2013, naming it ConanXCanon. He posted his first video after a week titled, ‘Let Me Introduce Myself’ which received over two hundred thousand hits. He then started vlogging and uploaded many interesting videos including, ‘An Average Week in My Life,’ ‘Crying Over Birthday Presents,’ ‘Taking Myself On A Date,’ ‘The Big Art Contest’ and ‘Moving.’
Conan Gray also filmed a very popular video called, ‘I’m a girly boy and I don’t care’ in which he told how people judged him for not being manly enough. He also said that he doesn’t care what others think of him and also confessed that he has never felt manly enough. Apart from vlogs, he also uploads a segment on his channel, ‘Monthly Favs’ in which Gray shares his favorite things for a month with his fans.
Finding his voice
Conan Gray developed a liking for music during his teenage years. He shared his first cover song on YouTube on November 15, 2014. Titled, To Make You Feel My Love, he played this track on ukulele and received a great response from the fans. He then went on to upload songs of several famous artists including, Love is a Losing Game by Amy Winehouse, Suburbia by Troye Sivan, Daydreamer by Adele and Daydreamin’ by Ariana Grande. During this time, he started to write his own material and released his first original song, Antics on October 4, 2015. Since then, he has come out with many catchy tracks like, Sometime, Honeybee, Lovesick Boys and The Other Side.
In 2016, Gray started to upload songs on SoundCloud. He shared his first original track, See Right Through on the site which was streamed more than two hundred thousand times. Considering the positive response he got for sharing his music, he decided to record his first extended play.
Sunset Season and tour
Conan Gray started writing material for his debut EP in early 2018 and on November 16th, he released, ‘Sunset Season.’ Besides Generation Why, the extended play featured four songs, Idle Town, Crush Culture, Greek God and Lookalike. All of these songs were influenced by pop and electronic sounds.
He is now going to embark on a North American tour to support this EP on the road. He will start the trek by playing his first gig at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland on March 11, 2019. Gray will then go on to play shows in cities like, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Phoenix, Austin and Dallas before he concludes the trek on April 13, 2019.
