Jovi had been playing guitar and piano for Raze band and knew well as a kid the ingredients of a successful band. While Jovi worked part time in a studio, he sent many of his demos to several record companies but all were rejected. The first track that managed to make an entry on airwaves was "Runway", Jovi had to request the promotion director to air their song. Soon the demand for "Runway" increased on radio and the band found its footing. Sambora and Torres had joined the band by 1984 but its name was not finalized.
The name "Bon Jovi" was suggested to them by a friend but not everyone was happy to be known with one band member’s name. Before they could change it to some flashy title, Bon Jovi became popular enough to get registered among the fans and critics. In 1986, Bon Jovi released their breakthrough album Slippery When Wet, the band made their first leap on the Billboard Hot 100 with their chart topping numbers "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Livin’ on a Prayer" and the band biggest hit "Wanted Dead or Alive".
"New Jersey" released in 1988, broke the sales and fame record of their previous album. The tracks which stayed on the top 10 list of the Billboard Hot 100 include; "I’ll Be There for You", "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Born to be My Baby", "Bad Medicine" and "Living in Sin".
