About Sister Act

 
Sister Act is based in 1978 Philadelphia, where the Mother Superior declares to her convent that it is in dire need of donations. The story then moves to Deloris Van Cartier, a buoyant singer in a nightclub run by her boyfriend, mob boss Curtis Shank. Heartbroken at his broken promise to help her meet a famed producer on the night, she decides to break up & head away from Philadelphia. Approaching Shank one last time, she is horrified to witness a cold-blooded murder carried out by Shank & his cronies of a suspected police informant. Shank catches her watching, & orders his men to capture her. Deloris flees for her life to an old school friend, Eddie, at the police station who decides to place her on the witness protection program. She is to remain hidden in a convent named The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mothers of Perpetual Faith disguised as a nun. Deloris relocates & is mortified by the limitations on the nuns’ lifestyles. Getting bored, she slips into a nearby slinky bar, followed by three nuns who buy her excuse that she is singing & dancing to save the poor lost souls.

However, Shank’s men enter, & a potentially combustible situation is avoided by Eddie & the Mother Superior, who impress on her the need to keep hidden & conform to practices. Deloris pans the lethargic choir she attends next morning, taking the lead to make the sisters sing in key & reenergize their performance. The reinvigorated church choir sheds its traditional somber mood, much to the horror of the Mother Superior, and becomes locally famous, winning donations. However, the famous Deloris is identified by the hunting men. On the eve of preparing for a special concert in front of the Pope, the high-flying choir is shocked to learn of Deloris’ identity as the Mother Superior warns her about Shank’s snooping men.

Deloris hurries from the convent, yet it is evident that the nuns have developed a liking for her unorthodox ways. She plans on testifying next morning & moving on to her dreamland of showbiz, yet reflection brings an understanding of all the friends she’ll give up for a shallow life. She resolves to go back to the convent, but is ambushed by a disguised Shank, & forced to beg for her life on her knees. Defying Mother Superior’s orders, the nuns line up to shield her, showing solidarity in the face of Shank’s aggression. Before Shank can start shooting them, Eddie enters, & after a scuffle, arrests the men. He even asks out Deloris in his joy, & the choir ends up performing for the Pope. Jerry Zaks is the director, while the book is by Bill & Cherie Steinkellner, with Alan Menken composing the music. Menken’s distinguished career with Walt Disney saw him notch up eight Oscars (more than any other living man) for classics like Pocahontas & Aladdin, and Glenn Slater pens the lyrics. The musical first premiered in the Pasadena Playhouse in October 2006, smashing sales records, & also had another tryout in Atlanta before the West End show.
 
Starting at the London Palladium in June 2009, Sister Act cultivated a glowing reputation, further exacerbated by its showing on Broadway, which started in April 2011. The feel-good factor of this nun on the run story has captivated everyone, aided & abetted by Menken’s scorching score.
