The birth of a juggernaut
The birth and subsequent success of Cirque du Soleil is often credited to three major people Guy Laliberté, Daniel Gauthier and Gilles Ste-Croix. Laliberté had once seen a Barnum and Bailey Circus performance as a kid, the memory of which stayed with him throughout his life. It inspired him to become a performance artist himself and so he joined a troupe that was touring the country. With them he learned the secrets of trade and returned to his hometown determined to put his new found knowledge to good use.
At this time Daniel Gauthier and Gilles Ste-Croix were the caretakers of a youth hostel that housed several of their city’s street performers. Together the three friends came up with the idea of employing the residents of the hostel as members of their own performing troupe, which they named Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul.
Even though the group was short lived, it put the three entrepreneurs on the map. That made it possible for the Canadian government to give them a grant of one and a half million dollars in 1983 to put up a show to commemorate the discovery of Canada by the explorer Jacques Cartier. This event was eventually named ‘Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil.’
Cirque du Soleil has been responsible for a number of impressive shows over the years, each tackling a different story. With each new story come different settings, props, sets and even performers, along with hours and hours of hard work to bring everything together perfectly. Their latest attempt is called ‘Toruk - The First Flight’ and is based on the hugely popular movie, Avatar.
Avatar was released in 2009 and it went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time. It became the first film to record revenues of upwards of two billion dollars and broke new ground in visual effects. It followed the tale of a group of human beings who tried to colonize a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. But before they could do that, they first needed to understand the locals, known as the ‘Na'vi’, who have a long and deep rooted connection with their homeland. The movie was a masterpiece and brought each and every little aspect of the fictional world of Pandora to life. Now Cirque du Soleil will attempt to do the same, but this time on stage.
Time to soar
With profits expanding and an increasing amount of markets opening up on a regular basis, these are exciting time for Cirque du Soleil. Their new production, ‘Toruk - The First Flight’ has been receiving some great reviews, especially its work with puppetry and the amazing lengths they have gone to, in order to bring the various animals and characters from the movie to life. Based on events that took place before the timeline in the movie, this story will take you deeper into the world of the Na’vi and provide you with a better understanding of their life and history before the arrival of humans. If you want to be part of this experience, then get your Cirque Du Soleil Toruk tickets and enjoy the performance, live at the Budweiser Gardens.
