The Beginning of the Weeknd’s Career
The Weeknd rose to fame in 2010 when he recorded three singles independently and uploaded them to YouTube. Titled ‘Loft Music’, ‘What You Need’ and ‘The Morning’, the tracks gained massive popularity through word of mouth and captured the attention of producer and rapper, Drake. Drake helped the Weeknd increase his fan base by getting him media coverage from The New York Times and Pitchfork Media.
Initial Mix Tape Releases
In 2011, the Weeknd released a mix tape ‘House of Balloons’ available for free download through his website. The independent record gained massive critical acclaim, as well as a nomination for 2011 Polaris Music Prize. In the same year, the R&B singer released 2 more mix tapes, ‘Thursday’ in August and ‘Echoes of Silence’ in December. With the success of these releases, the Weeknd was offered a recording contract by Republic Records.
