R. Kelly started his career when he, along with three other friends, formed the group, MGM. They recorded and released their first single, Why You Wanna Play Me in 1990. The group disbanded later on and R. Kelly was signed by Jive Records. He teamed up with the Public Announcement and began his journey to the top. The band put out their debut album, ‘Born into the 90’s’ in 1992 which featured hits like, Honey Love, She’s Got That Vibe, Slow Dance and Dedicated. Kelly then decided to go solo and parted ways with the Public Announcement in 1993.
A debut that stunned the world
R Kelly made his first impact as a solo artist with his debut album, ’12 Play’ in 1993 which went six times platinum in the United States. The album found itself at the second spot on the US Billboard 200 and first on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It also produced his first number one hit single, Bump N’ Grind which topped the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart and stayed there for a whopping twelve weeks. The success of the album announced his arrival to mainstream music in style and he hasn’t looked back since.
R. Kelly does it again
R. Kelly didn’t stop there and began to work on his second, self-titled, record that hit the music stores in 1995. The album, much like the first one, was met with massive commercial success. It went to the first spot on both the US Billboard 200 and the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. ‘R. Kelly’ went five times platinum in the United States and spawned three hit singles, You Remind Me of Something, I Can’t Sleep Baby (If I) and Down Low (Nobody Has to Know). R. Kelly’s efforts also received favorable reviews from the critics as AllMusic, Q and The Rolling Stones Album Guide gave it four stars out of five.
The hits just keep on coming
R. Kelly has come out with some very special R&B music for the fans of the genre over the years. He has put out twelve studio albums in total with sales exceeding the one hundred million mark.
