The Whitehorse in reality is more than just a band. It is the coming together of the talents of two wonderful artists who share the same dream. The performances headlined by the Whitehorse are more titled towards being shows than regular fold concerts. A look at the careers of Luke and Melissa shows they know what it takes to make it to the top. Luke had dreams of becoming a lawyer but as fate would have it he fell in love with the guitar. That fascination with the instrument changed his mind and he decided to devote himself to music.
He got a guitar when he was only thirteen years old and two years later he was playing with his father as a member of a blues group. He then moved from one band to another till he graduated from high school. Once that was done, Luke re-located to Vancouver and got onboard the group run by Sarah McLachlan. He followed that up by fronting Veal his own band in 1994. The group released three albums before coming to a halt in the early part of the 2000’s. Luke went on his own in the year 2001 and made his solo debut with the album Aloha, Manitoba. He followed it up with Outlaws: Live and Unreleased three years later.
The next year saw Luke released Broken (And Other Rouge States) that turned out to be his major breakthrough. The album was also got nominated for the prestigious Juno Award. A move to Nashville for half a year came after that which resulted in the writing of Blood’s Too Rich, Luke’s next album. He moved back to Canada and the album was released on 8th January 2008 in his native Canada and made its American debut on 24th June, 2008. The album was an even bigger hit that had the fans and critics purring over it. It made the list of the best albums of the year and earned won the coveted Canadian Folk Music Award for its efforts.
Whitehorse however is not only about Luke. Joining him onboard is his wife Melissa McClelland. Although she was born on the other side of the border in Chicago, she grew up in Ontario. It was there that she fell in love with music and began to learn. Once the basics were put in place, Melissa decided to shift to Toronto in order to make it big. She made her debut in 2001 with a self-titled album and followed that up with Stranded in Suburbia three years later.
Then came Thumbelina’s One Night Stand in 2006 Melissa’s commercial and critical breakthrough that attracted a lot of praise. It was another very well received release. She married Luke that year as well. Her last pre-Whitehorse album was titled Victoria Day and that hit the music stores on 14th April, 2009.
Whitehorse made its official debut in 2011 with a self-titled album. That was followed up by their second release titled The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss in August, 2012.
