The members of Vampire Weekend met while studying at Columbia University. The band initially started out as a rap collaboration act between Chris Tomson and Ezra Koenig. The two shared a love for African music and punk rock, with Koenig having already toured with The Dirty Projectors and experimented with African music and world music. The band was named after the title of a short film that Koenig worked on while at Columbia University. The band's first concerts were at Lerner Hall at Columbia University.
Vampire Weekend's first album was self–produced and released while Koenig and Tomson were working full time; the former as an English teacher and the latter as a music archivist. In 2007, their song Cape Code Kwassa Kwassa was ranked as one of the 100 Best Songs of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Later that year, Weekend also went on tour with The Shins. In 2008, they were dubbed The Year's Best New Band by Spin magazine and became the first ever band to make the magazine's cover before releasing a debut album. Four of the band's first songs made it to the Triple J Hottest 100 list in 2008.
2008 saw the release of their first self–titled album, which rose to the top twenty of the Billboard 200 and the top fifteen of the UK Albums Chart. Four of its songs were released at singles, charting on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, the UK Singles chart and even ranking fourth on the Readers' Rock List: Best Songs of 2008 by Rolling Stone magazine. The song A–Punk, which made it to the Rolling Stone list, was also featured in the opening of the movie Step Brothers, starring Will Ferell and John C. Reilly, as well as UK TV show, The Inbetweeners. It was also found in soundtracks of games such as Lego Rock Band, Guitar Hero 5 and Just Dance 2.
In 2010, Vampire Weekend released their second album, titled Contra. The album debuted on number one on the Billboard 200 and spawned two singles. Following the release, the band performed a concert on MTV Unplugged and then toured Europe as well as Canada with Fan Death as the supporting act. The band also released a video for one of its songs, Giving Up the Gun, which features cameos from Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, RZA and Lil Jon. In the US, the band has played at popular festivals like Austin City Limits Music Festival, Coachella, Bonnaroo and All Points West. In Australia, they performed at the Groovin' The Moo Festival. They also played at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK and the T in the Park festival in Scotland.
The Grammy Award winning band has won four awards from fourteen nominations. These include nominations from the American Music Awards, the BRIT Awards, the Grammy Awards, the International Dance Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards, the NME Awards and the Q Awards.
