Miami born record producer besides being the founder of Dim Mak Records, Steve Aoki, is in town and you know what that means! Its time for electro house music! Steve is not just a record producer, he is also a DJ and an artist. Born to former Japanese Olympic wrestler father, Steve Aoki grew up in Newport Beach, California. While at school he excelled at badminton, and was a star player on the school’s varsity team. According to Los Angeles Times, one of his class fellow’s, one day gave him a tape of mix music. Steve had never heard of anything like that before. The tape contained music of Minor Threat and Gorilla Biscuits. His life changed after that. Later, he graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara, with two bachelor degrees. One of his bachelor’s was in Women’s Studies and the other in Sociology. He produced records and organized underground concerts, while at the University. His apartment became the hub of all of his musical activities. Due to this, his apartment was named the Pickle Patch. The fact that Steve was to have a very bright future in music could be gauged from the fact that by the time he was in his twenties he had started his own record. He named his record label, Dim Mak, after his favorite childhood personality, Bruce Lee. Steve has played in several bands as well. For example, This Machine Kills, Esperanza and The Fire Newt Time, were some of his previous bands.

Dim Mak was founded in 1996. This record label has released music by other artists like Mystery Jets, Klaxons, Scanners, Whitey, The Bloody Beetroots and MSTRKRFT, amongst others electro house artist and bands. Steve also collaborates with Blake Miller to produce remixes. This dynamic duo works under the name moniker Weird Science. They have remixed big names like Peaches ("Boys Wanna Be Her"), Snoop Dogg ("Sensual Seduction") and Bloc Party (Helicopter").
Steve released his debut album Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles, in 2008. The name Pillow Face comes from a character created by Steve himself. The character is essentially Steve’s alter ego which is on the move without getting much sleep. Yet he manages to function. Airplane Chronicles refers to his globe trotting. The album had tracks from artists and bands like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Peaches, Justice, MSTRKRFT, and Datarock, with guest vocal appearances by Kid Sister, Uffie, Pase Rock, Mickey Avalon, Amanda Blank, Spank Rock, and Santogold.
Steve has remixed some very big names of the music industry. Music giants like Michael Jackson ("Dancin’ Machine"), Lenny Kravitz ("Dancin’ Till Dawn"), Snoop Dogg, Duran Duran ("Skin Divers"), Klaxons ("Echoes"), Kid Cudi ("Pursuit of Happiness") and Chester French ("She Loves Everybody"), have all been remixed by him. The track titled 'When the Wind Blows' from the the UK edition of his album called When The World Comes Down, too, was remixed by him. One of his remixes for Drake’s song "Forever", made to the top of Hype Machine’s chart in 2009. The song featured Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Eminem. Another of Steve’s blockbuster remix was "I’m In The House", which reached number 29 in the UK Singles Chart in its very first week of the release. Steve had collaborated with Zuper Blahq a.k.a. will.i.am., on this song. Furthermore, he has collaborated with Lady Gaga on "Small House Large Dreams", with Armand Van Helden on "Brrrat", with Laidback Luke on "Turbulence" and with Afrojack on song "No Beef."
Apart from his hectic work schedule, Steve is a philanthropist as well. He’s on the board of Michael Davis’s Music Is Revolution Foundation, ever since 2006. The Foundation, a non-profit entity provides music education support to public school students. The year 2007 was particularly good for his career as he won Best DJ of the Year by Paper Magazine, Best Set of the Season by Ibiza Awards, and Best Party Rocker DJ Award by BPM Magazine. In the following year, 2008, Steve won Best Mix Album of the Year Award by Billboard magazine.
