Miranda Taylor Cosgrove was born on the 14th of May, 1993 in Los Angeles, California. She was discovered at the age of three, when a talent agent saw her singing and dancing at Taste of L.A, a restaurant in Los Angeles. She took up the offer of the talent agent and appeared in a few television commercials for Mello Yelllo and McDonald's. She also did some modeling around that time. At the age of seven, she started to audition for television and theater roles. The chance for her first television appearance came up on 2001 when she was chosen to play a five-year-old Lana Lang in the pilot of Smallville. This led her to her film debut, when she appeared in the movie called School of Rock in 2003. She played the role of Summer Hathaway in the film, a young girl with great discipline and ambition who adjusts to the free-spirited nature of a new teacher at her school, by becoming the band manager of her classroom's rock band. This film was a box office hit and grossed over $131,282,949 worldwide. It was also a critical success, and received a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. David Ansen of Newsweek praised Cosgrove's acting in the film, saying that it was "spot on."
After the success of School of Rock, Cosgrove heard that the pilot for the show Drake and Josh had been picked up. In the hit television series, she played the mischievous little sister of the title character, Megan Parker. The show first aired on the 11th of January, 2004 and drew good responses in ratings. While working on the show, she developed a partnership with Dan Schneider, who was the producer of several Nickelodeon shows.
Miranda Cosgrove's career as a singer stated the iCarly theme song called Leave in All to Me. This song was released in December, 2007 and reached number one-hundred on the Billboard Hot 100. Her album reached number one on the Billboard Kid Albums chart. In the June of 2008, Columbia Records released the iCarly soundtrack, which had four songs by Miranda Cosgrove. She received positive critical reception for the songs. Her next promotional song Stay My Baby did not manage to reach the charts, but her single About You Now reached forty-seven on the Hot 100, and became her most popular single to date. She then became one of MTV's Female Pop Rookies of 2009. She released her first solo recording, the extended play, on the 3rd of February, only on the iTunes Store. Plans for her debut album had been active since July, 2008 and it was finally released on the 27th of April, 2010. It is called Sparks Fly. It was reported on the 17th of March, 2010 that Cosgrove had signed a contract to do twenty-six more episodes of iCarly.Cosgrove also did a voice-over for an animated character of Universal Studios' animated feature Despicable Me, which was released in July, 2010.
She has been nominated for numerous awards and has managed to win many, including two Favorite TV Show Awards for Drake and Josh and iCarly at the Kids' Choice Award in 2008, Best Performance in a TV Series (Comedy or Drama)- Leading Young Actress Award at the Young Artists Awards in 2009, and Favorite International Character of Series: Female Award at Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards Mexico in 2010.
