Marina and The Diamonds
Image and Inspirations
The 29 years old songstress is famous for her strikingly cartoonish and experimental public appearances. She is often spotted wearing vintage, cartoon or cheerleader themed dresses and claims to take fashion inspirations from Gwen Stefani, Sophia Loren, Shirley Mansion and Leigh Lezark. Interestingly enough, the singer has a clothing line of her own called “11 Diamonds”. Musically, the artist cites S Club 7, the Spice Girls and Britney Spears as her influences and even confesses she started smoking to sound like The Distillers' lead vocalist Brody Dalle. Diamandis' work has often been compared to artists like Kate Nash, Florence Welch, Karen O and Kate Bush. The singer however, does not approve of any such analogy as she describes her compositions to be a unique blend of 'alternate pop'. She described herself as a “DIY musician” and an “indie artist with pop goals”. Diamandis' debut album had hues of new wave music but the sophomore album was more of an 'electropop' style.
After spending a quiet childhood in the village of Pandy in Wales, Marina Diamandis discovered her passion for music when she was just a teenager. After several unsuccessful attempts to secure a deal, she finally decided to record her own music. After composing and creating music with the GarageBand, Diamandis self-released her EP titled “Mermaid vs. Sailor” in 2007 through Myspace. “Obsessions”, Diamandis' first single was released in 2009 and earned her some of the initial recognition which she had been struggling for. When she released her debut album “The Family Jewels” in February 2010, luck was tilted in her favor. The album hit the UK Albums Chart at number five and was certified gold. “I Am Not a Robot” was one of the famous tracks on the album that debuted at number 26 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was later supported with a North American and European tour in 2010 and 2011.
Marina Diamandis has been regarded as a feminist ever since she brought her second studio album to the public eye. Released in April 2012, this concept collection was lyrically moved by the notions of female identity and feminism. The pop singer intelligently created “Electra Heart”, the album's titular character, whose various personas were highlighted throughout the songs in the album. The album gave some of Diamandis' most celebrated works including “Housewife”, “Primadonna” and “Teen Idle”. It was also the singer's first chart smashing album, snagging the top slot on the UK Albums Chart in first week of sales.
