The formation of Leftover Salmon was kind of accidental. The band came into being in the city of Boulder Colorado in the year 1989 when one of the local groups namely Salmon Heads requested another band by the name of Left Hand String Band to perform as session musicians temporarily. The musical synergy among the two groups was kind of good and this resulted in the formation of Leftover Salmon. The initial lineup mainly consisted of three members Vince Herman on guitars, Drew Emmitt fiddle and vocals and Mark Vann banjo, other founding members were bassist Glen Keefe, keyboardist Joe Jogerst and drummer Jeff Sipe. Over the years the lineups kept changing except for Vann, Emmitt and Herman but after the death of Vann Herman and Emmitt are leading the group. The current lineup also includes bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Jose Martinez and a couple of years back Andy Thorn has joined as a banjo player. The band albums have been released by different labels like Los Records, Compendia, Compass and Hollywood Records. The genres on which the band focuses include rock, country, grass, slam and even Cajun.
The first album released by Leftover Salmon was in the year 1993 and it was named Bridges to Bert. This was followed by another one in the year 1995 and it was named Ask The Fish, both these albums were self-released. It was after these two albums that the band gained some recognition and this was the time when it not only landed a record deal with Hollywood Records but also performed at the very popular H.O.R.D.E Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere. With Hollywood Records it went on to release two fine studio albums named Euphoria (1997) and The Nashville Sessions (1999). These albums played an important role in increasing the popularity of the group but in the year 2002 mark Vann died of cancer. The band went into a temporary hiatus at the end of 2004 after releasing two more albums namely Live (2002) and Leftover Salmon (2004). The group reunited in 2007 and performed at a number of concerts as the All Good Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and High Sierra Music Festival. After almost eight years the band has just recently released another studio album which is in fact their seventh one, this album is named Aquatic Hitchiker and it has been released by Los Records. Leftover Salmon celebrated their two decades in music by performing at the Crested Butte in The Eldo Colorado which happens to be the debut venue for the group and it was here that they gave their first ever liver performance.
