About Kenny Vance and the Planotones

The band that is preparing to perform was founded by the artist Kenny Vance, who is a popular music producer, songwriter and singer. Formerly a member of the band, the Jay and the Americans, Vance entered the music industry in the fifties era and has worked on a variety of projects, singing with doo-wop groups, releasing solo albums, establishing bands and playing as member of rock and blues ensembles. Kenny Vance, since a young age and grew up amongst some of the most popular musicians such as Tin Pan Alley Song Machine and Brill Building, due to which he established his very first band at the naïve age of fifteen. This band was able to release two singles that debuted in the year 1959. These singles were released via Ivy Records, after which the band was approached by record producers, Mike Stoller and Jerry Lieber of the United Artists Record Label. The two decided to sign Vance and his band after which the name of the band was changed to Jay and the Americans in the year 1960.
After the signing, Vance was able to release a total of fifteen studio albums over a span of thirteen years. With single releases that were able to gain massive success, Vance and his band were honored with induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in the year 2002. Some of the hit singles include She Cried, Only in America, Come Dance with Me, Come a Little Bit Closer, There Goes My Baby, No Other Love, Some Enchanted Evening, Crying and Walking in the Rain. The band also achieved several feats such as being the opening act for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones debut performances in the United States. Vance was also able to establish his own publishing company during this time that was named JATA Enterprises.
With the dawn of the seventies, Vance was approached by a duo that consisted of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who were trying to make it big in the music industry. After listening to their demos, Vance decided to manage them. He even performed with the duo in the early seventies, after which the duo came forward with the track, “I Mean to Shine”. This track went onto being heard by the legendary Barbra Streisand who then released it via Barbra Joan Streisand Records. This marked the duo’s big break and they were then approached by ABC Dunhill Records. Vance then retired from band management and went onto producing movies and recording their soundtracks. He worked on films such as Animal House, Eddie and the Cruisers and American Hot Wax and he even performed with a fictional band in the movie, American Hot Wax in which Vance played the character of Professor Plano. The band was called “The Planotones” and they performed the track “Rock and Roll is here to stay”. The soundtrack of this movie was able to sell over a million copies, in the US alone.
It was in the year 1992 that Vance decided to recreate the fictional band, Kenny Vance and the Planotones that was formed as a doo-wop group.
