Making an impact as The Runaways
Joan Jett is a Philadelphia native who was born in 1958. She started to take interest in music when she got her first guitar at the age of fourteen. She later moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of her dreams and soon founded a group, The Runaways with a popular drummer, Sandy West. Jackie Fox, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie later joined them. Jett became the lead vocalist and also wrote or co-wrote most of the songs for the band.
The Runaways popularity skyrocketed as they not only came out with five hit LPs but also performed around the globe and opened for names like, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A film based on the group was also produced in 2010. Unfortunately The Runaways disbanded in 1979 after the departure of Currie and Jett started to pursue a solo career.

After disbanding The Runaways, Joan Jett met with the producer and songwriter, Kenny Launga and the two started a professional relationship together. She later formed the Blackhearts with Launga’s assistance and started conducting auditions and selected Gary Moss who previously played bass with local names like Top Jimmy and Rik L. Rik. He then suggested a guitarist for the band, Eric Ambel who was also a part of Rik L. Rik. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts completed their lineup by hiring Danny O’Brien who played drums. They started to perform in several gigs and also went on their first European tour after which O’Brien was replaced by Lee Crystal.
The band remained busy touring and soon started to make its presence felt in the music industry. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts reached a turning point in their career when the band delivered a historic performance at the Palladium in 1981.
I Love Rock’n’Roll
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts took a break from their extensive touring to work on their studio album, ‘I Love Rock’n’Roll’ which they released in 1981. The album was a massive hit which brought their way international success. It reached the second spot on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the United States. It featured three singles, I Love Rock’n’Roll, Summertime Blues and Crimson and Clover all of which performed well on the charts. The title track, I Love Rock’n’Roll reached the first spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016.
Climbing to the top
After the success of ‘I love Rock’n’Roll,’ Joan Jett and the Blackhearts went on to entertain fans with thirteen studio albums more. Their records like, ‘Album’ and ‘Up Your Alley’ received favorable reviews from the critics and were certified gold and platinum in the United States respectively.
