Entering the music scene almost 19 years ago, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have risen from humble beginnings to reach their current status. The 10-piece band continues to entertain the fans with their astounding music that’s a unique blend of funk, soul and gospel beats. Since their inception, the band has won over the critics, bloggers and record collectors with their ingenious and heartfelt compositions.
Sharon Jones is a Georgia native and discovered her singing talent by being a part of her church choir. She was encouraged by the fellow parishioners to pursue a career in singing and was urged to go mainstream. For better opportunities she moved to Brooklyn along with her family and while still in her teens, explored funk and disco music scene of the 70s. Her talent was discovered and soon she was approached by labels. Although Jones had her heart set on producing her own album, she was initially offered to join other artists as a backup singer. She provided backup vocals for many R&B, disco and gospel bands. Sharon Jones however, wasn’t happy with where her career was going and went back to church singing.
Luck once again knocked on her door and in 1996 she was approached by Desco Record, who was impressed by her talent. She joined the label’s house band and released few singles that found immense popularity. Sharon was lauded for her singing and her genuineness and warmth turned many heads. Soon she became popular as the “queen of funk” and the moniker has stuck with her. She then formed Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings in 2002 after signing with Daptone Records and released the album “Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings”. The band followed the release with extensive touring and in 2005 came up with their sophomore release.
“Naturally” had the same success formula as its predecessor and treated the listeners to full-force funk. The album pays homage to the R&B, funk genre and has Sharon belting out some powerful vocals. It includes cover of the song This Land Is Your Land and the diva has given it her touch. “100 Days, 100 Nights” followed in 2007 and it peaked at number three on the Top Heatseekers chart. The album not only showed band’s evolution but also of Jones as a singer. She showed immense growth and the fans got a chance to enjoy her trained, powerful gospel voice. The third record was a step up from the band’s previous efforts and offered a more upbeat, sassy and funky music.
In 2010 “I Learned the Hard Way” hit the shelves and it peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200. Next came “Soul Time!” in 2011 and it mostly included unreleased singles by the band. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings came up with their latest album in 2014 titled “Give the People What They Want”. It reached number 22 on Billboard 200 and peaked at 6th position on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album opens with the uplifting track Retreat! and marches straight to Stranger To My Happiness, which is soul flavored single.
In the upcoming tour, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will be treating the fans to all their new numbers as well as old hits. With Tedeschi Trucks Band & Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings tickets in hand, enjoy a double dose of entertainment.
