Her mother Emiko was a Japanese dance teacher and it was she who took Keiko to a piano lesson when she was only five years old on 1st June. That date was chosen by Emiko because as per ancient Japanese history anyone who is introduced to any lesson on this date will pursue it for a very long time. It worked for Keiko who started to learn piano when she was studying in school. She started to learn the basics of classical music but soon shifted her focus to jazz. Keiko was inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Jarre. Shortly afterwards she started to compose her own tracks. She further enhanced her learning by studying the art of music at the famous Yamaha Music Foundation. After successfully completing her stint there she formally took her first steps in the world of music by becoming a member of Cosmos, a jazz band from her native Japan.

About Keiko Matsui

Her relationship with Yamaha Music Foundation continued and when she was nineteen the school sent her to the US for her debut album. It was an LP titled A Drop of Water that came out on 1987 and immediately became a hit. The name of the LP was a tribute to everyone who had passed away in the Space Shuttle Challenger accident a year earlier. The success of the album brought her to the notice of major labels and she signed up for MCA Records shortly afterwards. The 1990’s marked the rise of Keiko Matsui as a major star. Her album Sapphire hit the music stores in the year 1995 and became an instant rage. The album went to the top positions on multiple charts. Her next album Dream Walk came out next year and it repeated the trick by taking top positions on more than one chart to announce Keiko’s arrival to the masses in style. Her success led her to be named the Top Indie Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Year by Billboard.  She embarked on a major road trip in 1997 to raise awareness about breast cancer and released a CD titled A Gift of Hope that was for the benefit of the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization.
Keiko’s nest album was titled Full Moon and the Shrine and it came out in 1998. This album showcased the diversity and the sheer magnificence of her music. She once again switched her focus to charities and the result was Deep Blue that was released in the year 2001. The album was a dedication to people suffering from bone marrow related illness. She then released a special CD which was named Gift of Life to raise money for The Marrow Foundation and The National Marrow Donor Program. Keiko’s next release was titled The Ring which was a result of the thoughts she had been having about making the world a better place for us to live in. 2004 saw the release of Wildflower another humanitarian effort in support for the United Nations World Food Program to provide food for millions of poor people around the world.
