A Promising Singer, Raised On Steady Diet of Country, Rock & Hip-Hop
Born in a musically gifted family and having an award-winning country singer as a father, it was inevitable for Thomas Rhett to become a musician. Son of the famous Rhett Akins, Thomas grew up listening to Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. It wasn’t until he started his senior year in high school that he showed some serious interest in music as a career and completed two years of college before signing with EMI. He co-wrote the hit song I Ain't Ready to Quit that featured on Jason Aldean’s acclaimed album “My Kind of Party”.
He later switched to Valory Music Group and with them released his first single Something to Do with My Hands. Fusion of contemporary country and good-time rock n` roll, the track made it to Hot Country Songs chart, and officially announced the arrival of Thomas Rhett. His complete album “It Goes Like This” hit the shelves in 2013 and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200.
Rhett Akins & Thomas Rhett – The Father-Son Duo
Rhett Akins has mentored numerous musicians and helped write several country music hits in the last two decade. In a recent interview, the veteran admitted jokingly that he was jealous of the 25-year Thomas and his effortlessness at songwriting and singing. According to papa Rhett, he had to work hard to write good songs and to play guitar, but Thomas always had been a natural. He could pen lyrics with quite an ease.
In the world of music it’s not unusual to have a father-son combo, and in country music alone legends like Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Steve Earle and Bobby Bare were succeeded by their sons. The only difference between these musicians and the Rhett duo is that this father and son have dominated the country airwaves together. For Thomas’s debut album, Akins collaborated and shared songwriting credits for the some of the top songs that featured on radio. Akins called this experience the highlight of his 20 years in Nashville. “I mean, that’s a dream come true for any songwriter or artist, but even more of a dream come true when it happens with your own son”.
