Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was formed in 1966 by singer-songwriter Bruce Kunkel and guitarist-singer Jeff Hanna, both of whom performed under the name of New Coast Two, and later switched to the title of the Illegitimate Jug Band. They then entered informal jam sessions held at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, where they came across many multi-instrumentalists such as washtub bassist and guitarist Ralph Barr; clarinetist and guitarist Les Thompson; jug player and harmonicist Jimmie Fadden; and vocalist Jackson Browne. The six men formed a jug band, adopting the southern California folk-rock sound, and began by performing in local clubs while dressed in cowboy boots and pinstripe suits. They played their first ever paid show in Huntington Beach, California, at the Golden Bear.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released their first album in 1967, issuing their first single titled Buy for Me the Rain, which became a success on Top Forty bringing the group to the forefront of country-rock. They then made an appearance on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, while also performing at several concerts alongside other acts like The Doors and Jack Benny. In later years, the group gained sufficient critical and commercial success, in particular through the second volume of their album Will the Circle be Unbroken, which while winning them two Grammys, also attained the ranks of certified gold. They released their most recent album in 2009 called Speed of Life comprising of thirteen songs including two classic covers Stuck in the Middle originally sung by Stealer’s Wheel and Going Up the Country by Canned Heat.
