Preceding Cowell’s creation of Il Divo
, was the inspiration of creating such a band after he heard Andrea Bocelli’s hit Con te partiro
. Then in 2004, a quartet consisting of male operatic singers by the name of G4, appeared on Cowell’s X-Factor
TV show, and finished the contest as runners-up, but the group had already signed withSony Records. Cowell understood the then recent hype surrounding classical music and lyrical voices, and how such elements were gaining momentum in the United Kingdom, so he set out to create such a group that could encapsulate the essence of The Three Tenors. In order to accomplish this he undertook a search on an international level that would bring him young vocalists willing to venture upon the Il Divo project. The search continued for two years, beginning with 2001 and being completed in 2003, at the end of which the final member of the quartet, Dvaid Miller, was signed in. This carefully selected band now consisted of a renowned Spanish baritone, a couple of classically trained tenors and a French pop singer. The cultural mix of the band has perhaps contributed to the popularity of the group, exciting fans to buy Il Divo tickets
The group then undertook a six month long tour of Europe, Australia and America, at the completion of which, they were invited to take part in twenty shows by Barbra Streisand on her tour of North America, titled Streisand: The Tour
. This tour alongside the new band was marked as the second most successful tour of 2006, among all tours, accumulating a sum of over ninety two million dollars. In April 2007, Il Divo
appeared on American Idol
and performed in the Idol Gives Back
session of the show that is a charitable endeavor meant to raise money for African and North American children. By the end of the following year, the band was invited to perform their new single on the finale of the Swedish Idol, in Stockholm at the Globen Arena.
In 2006, Il Divo
also sang the official song of FIFA World Cup, titled The Time of Our Lives
alongside R&B artist Toni Braxton, and performed live in the opening game between Costa Rica and Germany, as well as at the completion of the tournament on its closing ceremony. The song was made available on the tournament’s compilation album, as well as on Braxton’s European reissue of her studio album Libra
