BPO was founded by a young musician and entrepreneur Cameron Baird, who discovered a brilliant maestro in Hungarian musician Lajos Shuk back in 1934. With Lajos Shuk as music director, the orchestra launched its enthralling performances in classical and youth concerts during the 1935–1936 season. BPO was helped by a government grant in 1940 which enabled them to build Kleinhans – their home venue since then.
