Kurt Vile always was interested in music. He used to write tracks as a kid. When he was fourteen years old he received a banjo as a gift from his father. Vile began to play the instrument like he would play a guitar. It took him another three years to come out with his first tape. He then started to put his music on CD’s and distribute them to anyone who was willing to listen. He was inspired by the kind of music that was the hallmark of Drag City. In order to make both ends meet Vile used to operate a forklift during that phase of his career.
He went and spent a couple of years in Boston but then returned home to Philadelphia after that. That is when he met “Adam Granduciel” and the two started to work together on different projects. Those collaborations then resulted in the creation of their own group named “The War on Drugs” in the year 2003. The duo then came out with their first album titled “Wagonwheel Blues” in 2008. Kurt Vile was working as a solo artist as well and that very same year saw his first album hit the music stores as well. It was titled “Constant Hitmaker” and received quite a lot of positive feedback especially from the critics. Performing as a member of The War on Drugs and a solo artist was proving a little tough so Kurt Vile quit the band to focus solely on his career as a solo performer.
Vile then went on to release “God is Saying This to You…” in the year 2009. The album was a collection of a few recordings he had done at his own house six years earlier in 2003. He followed that up with “Childish Prodigy” in 2009. The album did fairly well and brought Vile to the attention of a much wider audience. Allmusic, Tiny Mix Tapes and Uncut all gave the album four stars out of five. NME gave it eight marks out of ten. The music was not as lo-fi as Vile’s previous two releases and the change in direction was appreciated by a lot of people.
His next and fourth studio album was titled “Smoke Ring for My Halo” and it hit the music stores in 2011. The album was another critical hit. It was given twelfth spot by Mojo on its top fifty albums of the year. Not only that but Uncut put it on the fourteenth spot whereas Pitchfork placed it on sixteenth. Kurt Vile then came out with an EP titled “So Outta Reach” and also featured on “Slave Ambient,” an album by “The War on Drugs.” His next and the most recent studio album was titled “Walkin on a Pretty Daze” and it came out on 9th April, 2013. It turned out to be another hit release that went on to capture prominent positions on charts both in the U.S. as well as United Kingdom.
Kurt Vile has talent in abundance that is for sure. His rise to the top of indie rock has been very impressive. A career that began with him distributing his own recordings on CD-R’s has now turned into a really promising one.
