Dragonette is an electropop and synthpop band belonging to Ontario, Canada. The band was formed by the couple that consists of the bassist Dan Kurtz and singer/songwriter Martina Sorbara in 2005. Two of them met on a musical festival in Canada and decided to work together to form a duo which they named “The Fuzz.” Initially they started off just for the sake of fun and used to compose music and lyrics in their basement, from there the band gradually grew and found success. Dragonette released their first ever self titled EP in 2005 which landed them a contract with Mercury Records. When they released “Galore,” their debut album in September of 2007 with the record, the band moved to London. That same year the group embarked on a national tour. They also acted as opening acts of various famous local bands such as Sugababes and Basement Jaxx and performed in a number of relatively smaller venues.
Dragonette released two music video for the first time for their songs I Get Around and Take It Like A Man. I Get Around managed to make it to UK Singles Chart claiming ninety two spot and Take It Like a Man received airplay with hit song The Girls. When I Get Around hit the shelves in Canada it received far more critical acclaim than it did in the United Kingdom and managed to make it to number fifty seven on the Billboard chart “Canadian Hot 100.”
Dragonette was awarded with the Juno Award in the category of “Best New Group” in 2008. The same year Sorbara and Kurtz wrote and composed the song named Grab a Hold along with fellow singer Cyndi Lauper. The song was included in her album “Bring Ya to the Brink” in 2008. After that, their band member Will James Slapleton left the group and Chris Hugget took his place.
In September of 2009, the band released their sophomore studio album “Fixin to Thrill.” The record was a lot more polished effort from the bands side and managed to chart Canada’s “Top Ten” charts. In collaboration with a number of different DJs, Dragonette have produced several singles which have received critical acclaim. In 2006, the band released a song in collaboration with Basement Jaxx, named Take Me Back to Your House. They also released a number of songs with French DJ named Martin Solveig. The songs include Hello, Big in Japan, Can’t Stop and Boys & Girls. Later in 2011, a collection of these collaborations was released as an album by Solveig titled “Smash.” “Dance Recording of the Year” Juno Award was given to the band that same year for the track Hello in the April of 2012.
Dragonette collaborated with the band Kaskade on the track Fire in Your New Shoes and on the track Animale with Don Diablo. In the July of 2010, the band released a single that included two songs Volcano and Our Summer. Later that year, “Mixin to Thrill,” a remix album including various mixes was released as well, which included a number of new as well as old tracks of the band. Many of these were collaborations as well. When Nicola Robert, a member of the band “Girls Aloud” decided to release her solo debut album, the band helped her with the song Lucky Day in 2011.
