Wicked is set in the Land of Oz around the time of Dorothy’s arrival. Its story revolves around the frosty but compact bond between Glinda, Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba, Wicked Witch of the West. It starts with a flashback following a mourning Glinda chastising the Ozians for celebrating Elphaba’s death, and takes us to their friendship at Shiz University. The beautiful and vain Glinda was forcibly made roommates with the universally loathed, green-skinned, yet smart Elphaba. They managed to like each other, yet constant clashes over their opinions of The Wizard’s corruption and common love interests punctuated their relationship.

Wicked premiered at Gershwin Theater in October 2003. Three-time Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz reignites the magical music of his Pocahontas and Godspell soundtracks as composer/lyricist, while Winnie Holzman provides the book. Joe Mantello of Take Me Out fame is the director.

Wicked has won 32 awards, including three Tony, six Drama Desk, and one Grammy Award. Singapore, Helsinki, Melbourne, Osaka, Stuttgart, and Brisbane host international productions of the show, which also has two National tours before the Wicked San Diego CA show.
