West Side Story Tickets
West Side Story Tickets
Broadway’s West Side Story revival continues to play to sold-out crowds. Premiering at the Broadway Theatre on February 20, 2020, the musical has been performing successfully in front of capacity audiences. Initially, the sales of West Side Story tickets dipped due to a bumpy opening followed by a less effusive review by The New York Times. The musical has also been weathering some ongoing protests caused by the inclusion of ballet dancer Amar Ramasar in the cast, as he's been involved in a #MeToo scandal. However, the musical rocketed back up in its second week and is now among the ranks of second-highest grossing shows on Broadway.
West Side Story – Revival of the Classic American Musical
A timeless classic, the musical West Side Story gets some treatment under its new director Ivo van Hove. The endearing story of star-crossed lovers, inspired by William Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo & Juliet", takes on a more modern approach. Premiering on February 20, 2020 at the Broadway Theatre, the revival brings to stage 33 performers, all making their debut at the same time and setting a record.
The reimagined version touches the sensibility of its audience – according to the Rolling Stone Magazine, Hove has broken all the rules for all the right reasons and he has managed it brilliantly. Powerful, fresh choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker makes West Side Story a fantastic production.
21st Century West Side Story
This has been the ultimate desire of Ivo van Hove – to make 6 decades-long musical into a strikingly new, show-stopping 21st century production. Casting a new lens on the show's protagonists – The Sharks and The Jets, the duo of Ivo and Keersmaeker has made this timeless story inclusive of American population today. Hispanic rooted Sharks don't have the same traits that they had 50 years ago, and the Jets in the early productions were only of European descent. That's not the case now.
Recognized as a contemporary choreographer, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker gives the musical its much needed departure from ballet. She has approached the dance from its shape and form, applying the principle "harmonizing opposites". A fusion of street dancing, hip-hop and house dancing, West Side Story soars with its gravity defying extensions and postures. Her approach has turned the hit musical into a gritty, bold blockbuster.
The Debutants
West side Story musical will mark the debut of 33 performers, which is a Broadway record. The Broadway Theatre has welcomed a young and diverse cast from different parts - from Cuba to Fort Lauderdale to Massachusetts. The musical is strongest in its group dance numbers and these fresh performers bring a lot of energy to the stage.
Effectively luring West Side Story tickets holders to the theatre, the production feels grippingly groundbreaking again. Kinetic, raw and modern to the core, West Side Story by director Ivo van Hove hits its mark.
