The long-running television game show The Price Is Right, created in 1972 by Mark Goodson, Bob Stewart, and Bill Todman, features a number of contestants trying to win cash and other prizes by correctly or approximately guessing the prices of merchandise. Contestants are usually chosen from the studio audience. The show made its television debut in September 1972 with Bob Barker as the host. The former Miss USA, Miss Universe, and Truth or Consequences moderator continued in this role until his retirement in June 2007, making him the longest-running host of the program. Gameplay

The Price Is Right game play normally consists of four parts or rounds. The contestants bid on a prize shown to them and the one whose bid is closest to the actual retail price of the merchandise (without going over) wins the item as well as the right to compete in the next round. The winner then proceeds to play a pricing game which provides an opportunity to win additional cash and other prizes.

Once the pricing game ends, the process is repeated to find new contestants. After the third and sixth rounds of Pricing Games, three competitors play the Showcase Showdown. Here, they spin “The Big Wheel” to find out who will advance to the Showcase.

Towards the end of the episode, the Showcase is contested for by the two players with the highest winnings. A “showcase” of prizes then appears on the stage for each competitor who must bid on it.
