Broadway
The Color Purple premiered at The Broadway Theatre on December 1, 2005. It was co-produced by Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones with direction by Gary Griffin. The choreography was done by Donald Byrd and musical direction given by Linda Twine. After 30 previews and more than 900 successful performances, the musical closed on Broadway on February 24, 2008. The production was able to recoup its $11million investment within its first year. When it closed it had grossed well over $100 million.
In January of 2015, producers Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Roy Furman announced the revival of the musical on Broadway. This time around, the role of Shug was played by Jennifer Hudson who was then making her Broadway debut. Cynthia Erivo continued to play Celie while Danielle Brooks was chosen for the character of Sofia.
The show opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in December 2016 following a number of previews the month before. It received an overwhelming response from fans and critics alike. The production bagged a Tony Award in the category of ‘Best Revival of a Musical’ while Erivo won the honor for ‘Best Actress in a Musical.’
Plot
The Color Purple is a story that revolves around Celie, an African-American woman who is subjected to immense abuse and bigotry by the men in her life. Her abusive father marries her off to an equally cruel and much older widower ‘Mister’ Albert Johnson. Celie’s life becomes worse and she is left helpless and lonely. She perseveres and holds on to her dream of being reunited with her beloved sister Nettie in Africa. As the story unfolds, there are numerous revelations and events which make this tale extremely moving. It’s a story about love, abuse, faith and strength in the face of adversity.
