Broadway

The Color Purple premiered at The Broadway Theatre on December 1, 2005. It was co-produced by Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones with direction by Gary Griffin. The choreography was done by Donald Byrd and musical direction given by Linda Twine. After 30 previews and more than 900 successful performances, the musical closed on Broadway on February 24, 2008. This time around, the role of Shug was played by Jennifer Hudson who was then making her Broadway debut. Cynthia Erivo continued to play Celie while Danielle Brooks was chosen for the character of Sofia.

The show opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in December 2016 following a number of previews the month before. It received an overwhelming response from fans and critics alike. The production bagged a Tony Award in the category of ‘Best Revival of a Musical’ while Erivo won the honor for ‘Best Actress in a Musical.’
