For almost two decades this ballet company stayed small until The School of Richmond Ballet was established in 1975. It was the founding of this school that transformed it from a student venture into a professional academy.

Stoner Winslett was appointed as the company’s artistic director in 1980. In 1984, this professional ballet company was given the rank of being the first of its kind in the Commonwealth. Then in 1990, it got the designation of "The State Ballet of Virginia" awarded by Governor Wilder. Coming years saw the ballet company growing by leaps and bounds. It moved into a new venue in 2000, a magnificent facility situated in a central place in downtown Richmond. The facility was given by Reynolds Metals Company – a generous gift. At present, the annual attendance of the programs it offers reaches 100,000 comprised of people from Virginia and beyond. Its repertory includes over 50 original works and it also offers outreach and educational programs to its patrons. It is also a thriving dance school and has over 500 students enrolled at all times.
